If, in Sacred Scripture, it is written that those who walk after Christ are called to judge the world, it is also said that judgment must begin with the house of God, that is, Church. Yet only those who are in a position to pronounce a relevant judgment on this Institution, who are part of it and who live on it. This means that in no way does it mean to question the foundations laid down by the Apostles themselves. But the weight of centuries and the vicissitudes linked to history and human weakness necessarily gave the Institution a particular configuration which, like a mirror chipped and warped by time, only reflects a partial image Conforming to its model. Thus, Western Christianity was characterized very early by a theology which developed in reference to the philosophical systems of pagan antiquity. The result was an intellectualist approach and expression of the Christian mystery, accessible to the cultivated clerics, but foreign to the piety of the people of God, relegated thereby to the domain of private devotions.
Being the immutable deposit of faith, it is therefore permissible to exercise critical judgment over a construction which has been built up over centuries and which today reveals increasingly wide flaws. To the point of jeopardizing the institution itself. However, in order to avoid the trap of sterile negativity, any criticism must refer to a positive vision, to another model dealing with the same realities as those which it considers. Where can we find this point of support? In the Christian East, which offers a valid alternative through a spirituality whose outlines are the subject of this book. The ancient monastic literature from the Egyptian and Syrian deserts opens with the vision of a Christianity which today becomes more accessible to us.
However, this book does not pretend, by its content, to provide a recipe for the spiritual crisis that the Church of the West is facing in the face of the reality of the modern world. He merely describes the different stages of a spiritual path that has been tried and is likely to stimulate a reflection destined to emerge from certain ruts in which theology has been impinging for too long.
